Elvet Recruitment are proud to be working in partnership with a leading UK organisation to recruit a Payroll Specialist based in the North East

Our client is seeking a Payroll Specialist to join their established Payroll team, supporting the accurate and timely delivery of payroll for employees across a diverse workforce.

This is a key role within the organisation, ensuring compliance with HMRC regulations, UK employment legislation, and internal policies, while contributing to a positive colleague experience. You will work closely with HR (People Services), Finance, auditors, and operational teams, gaining exposure to complex payroll structures within a large, multi-site organisation.

This is an excellent opportunity for a payroll professional looking to develop within a stable and forward-thinking organisation, with strong benefits and genuine long-term career progression.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Processing the monthly payroll for approximately 3,000 employees, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and adherence to strict deadlines
  • Working closely with People Services to manage payroll changes including starters, leavers, contractual amendments, and absence-related adjustments
  • Implementing annual pay awards in line with collective bargaining agreements and company policies
  • Administering complex pay elements including overtime, standby, call-out, disturbance payments, and operational allowances
  • Managing the company car scheme, including Benefit-in-Kind calculations and HMRC compliance
  • Ensuring full compliance with UK employment legislation, HMRC regulations, pension requirements, and trade union agreements
  • Calculating statutory payments and deductions such as Income Tax, National Insurance, SSP, SMP, SAP, and SPP
  • Preparing and validating payroll reports for internal stakeholders, Finance, auditors, and regulatory bodies
  • Supporting year-end processes including P60s, P45s, HMRC submissions, and data validation checks
  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives, including system enhancements and system transitions

What We’re Looking For:

  • Previous experience in a payroll role within a large, multi-site organisation
  • Strong understanding of UK payroll legislation, HMRC requirements, and statutory payments
  • Experience handling complex payroll structures and multiple pay elements
  • High level of numerical accuracy and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with HR, Finance, Operations, and external stakeholders
  • Proficiency with payroll or ERP systems (Oracle E-Business Suite or similar preferred)
  • A proactive, adaptable approach with strong problem-solving capabilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and across departments

Desirable:

  • Experience supporting payroll system transformations, particularly Oracle Cloud implementations
  • Experience working in a unionised environment with collective bargaining agreements
  • Background in utilities, energy, engineering, or similar complex industries
  • Experience producing audit-ready reports and supporting internal/external audits
  • Previous experience leading or supporting team activities within a payroll or HR function

Role Information:

  • Competitive salary of £30,000 – £40,000 (DOE)
  • Up to 10% annual performance bonus
  • Double-matched pension scheme
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays (rising with service)
  • Full-time, Monday to Friday
  • Office-based in Shiremoor, Tyne & Wear
  • Excellent opportunities for career development and progression
