We’re recruiting an Internal Auditor to join the Finance team of an established organisation based in County Durham.

You’ll provide independent assurance over financial governance, risk management and internal controls, planning and delivering risk-based audits across the business. Working closely with senior management and operational teams, you’ll identify areas of risk and inefficiency while providing practical recommendations to improve processes, strengthen controls and support compliance.

This is a varied opportunity for a commercially aware and inquisitive finance professional who enjoys working independently while confidently providing constructive challenge across different areas of a business.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Take ownership of the Group’s risk register, ensuring it is regularly reviewed and maintained
• Develop and deliver a risk-based internal audit programme across all areas of the business
• Plan, scope and undertake internal audits in line with the annual audit plan
• Evaluate the effectiveness of financial, taxation, operational and compliance controls
• Assess risk management processes and governance arrangements, identifying weaknesses and areas of business risk
• Produce clear and concise audit reports with practical recommendations for improvement
• Present audit findings to senior management and monitor progress against agreed action plans
• Follow up previous audit recommendations to ensure agreed actions have been effectively implemented
• Support the development and maintenance of the internal control framework and review compliance with policies, delegated authorities and regulatory requirements
• Assist with investigations into suspected fraud, financial irregularities or control breaches where required
• Own the HMRC correspondence log and ensure relevant actions are followed through
• Provide assurance to the SAO officer annually to support sign-off of the SAO return

What We’re Looking For

• ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CIA qualified
• Previous experience in internal audit, external audit, risk management or financial controls
• Strong understanding of internal control frameworks and risk-based auditing
• Excellent analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills
• Ability to assess complex business processes and identify practical improvements
• Strong report writing, presentation and communication skills
• Confident working with and constructively challenging stakeholders at all levels
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple audits and competing priorities
• High level of integrity, professionalism and attention to detail
• Commercially aware with strong business acumen and an independent, objective approach
• Curious, adaptable and comfortable working across a wide range of business functions

Desirable:

• Experience within construction, engineering, infrastructure or property
• Knowledge of financial controls within project-based environments
• Experience using data analytics, audit software or working with ISO, governance or enterprise risk management frameworks
